Verify Our Figures
Repeat Our Calculation Steps
Verify the Survival Rate figures by repeating our calculation steps below.
1. Download the latest official COVID-19 data by age group from:
2. Follow the formula we used to calculate the Survival Rate:
Survival Rate = 1 - | Reported Deaths |
Reported Infections * (1 + Unreported Factor) |
t = Beginning of Virus until Last Update Date.
Where:
- Reported Deaths = Total death figures for all sexes and "unknown sex", where applicable, as reported by the government.
We are making the assumption that a reported case is categorized as either "Infection" or "Death", meaning that a person who dies following an infection is moved from the government's Total Infection tally to the Total Deaths. Counting a person as both infected and dead will increase the denominator and raise the Survival Rate.
- Reported Infections = Total infection figures for all sexes and "unknown sex", where applicable, as reported by the government.
- Unreported Factor = 0 by default. This follows the incorrect assumption that all infections, even asymptomatic ones, are reported to health officials. The Unreported Factor can be changed from the drop-down menu on the top left corner of the page to allow for a more accurate survival rate approximation.
The Unreported Factor isn't applied to the Reported Deaths figure as deaths caused by COVID-19 are less likely to be left out of official stats. That's beacuse deaths are usually reported to authorities and require certificates specifying the cause of death.
- Time period for calculation = "Beginning of virus" (the date when each government began tracking COVID cases, usually January 2020) until Last Update date, indicated at the bottom of the page.
